Prairie Breeze

Rufus and Jane Musser had a vision when they opened Milton Creamery in 2006 – they wanted to support small, family run dairies, and they wanted to provide jobs for their friends and neighbors in a place where sustainable employment isn’t always easy to find. Even when Covid was at its peak and business dropped off, they kept all thirty employees and continued to buy all the milk from the family farms to support their community.

Not only do they care deeply for their people, but they also produce great cheese! Prairie Breeze, a cheddar I know many of you are familiar with and love deeply, is Milton Creamery’s interpretation of a classic “white cheddar style” but with more pizazz *jazz hands, jazz hands*. It is crumbly, yet rich and juicy, and it has a mouthwatering sharpness, the sweetness of butterscotch, and the savoriness of chicken broth. And because of all these qualities, it is the main cheese in our gooey, crunchy Epic Grilled Cheese. We recommend you add it to any grilled cheese you can, but also try it on bright tomato toast, for breakfast with cornmeal waffles and maple syrup, and bring it on any apple picking adventure you might be going on in the next month. Prairie is versatile, lovable, and easygoing, so really, put it on any dang thing you want.

For the love of cheese and creameries that love their people and their cheese,

Kiri

PS. Here’s an article from Bon Appetit about a lunch with Toni Morrison. It made me hungry and nostalgic for the writer, for meals at home, for friends and family.
