NV Valli Unite, Allegretto (Piedmont, Italy) | Valli Unite was founded 30 years ago in Colli Tortonesi by three, young farmers dedicated to rural Italy, organic agriculture and sustainable living. Today the co-operative has over 30 organic growers producing wines, grains, fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses, in addition to supplying their own restaurant, shop and inn with their organic products. The Allegretto is an ethereal pét-nat of Cortese and Malvasia grapes with no added sulfites. 

2014 La Distesa Bianco, Gli Eremi, Cupramontana  (Marche, Italy) | Cupramontana has a long history of viticulture; it is the oldest wine producing region in the Marche and dates back to 1186! Camaldolese monks used to have a monastery and vineyard that stood right outside La Distesa's cellar. The Verdicchio grapes come from a single vineyard that is particularly suited for vine cultivation. It is nestled like a basin at the foot of hills, that protect it from cold winds. The vineyard has about 30 rows of Verdicchio grapes with clay and calcareous soil. After being harvested in boxes by winemaker Corrado Dottore, the grapes are fermented and aged in old oak barrels for a year. Gli Eremi is full of luscious sage, white peach, and apricot notes. 

2016 Domaine Rietsch, Entre Chien et Loup (Alsace, France) | This family run winery in Mittelbergheim is currently run by Sophie and Jean-Pierre Rietsch, who use winemaking practices are geared towards biodynamic. This Auxerrois (a varietal that thrives in cool climates like Alsace, Luxembourg, and Germany) was aged for 13 months on its lees. It has fresh brioche, orange zest, and lemony notes that coast alongside brilliant acidity. (This wine label is pictured above.)

2016 Domaine la Cabotte’ Colline’ (Côtes du Rhône, France) | Back in the early 1980’s Gabriel d’Ardhuy bought 45 hectares of vineyards that he put in the care of one of his seven daughters, Marie-Pierre, who still runs the estate today with her husband. This biodynamic blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre was grown on calcareous sandstone. After being fermented in thermo-regulated vats for 10 days this blend is fresh with notes of raspberries and earth. 

2016 Monte Bernardi 'Retromarcia' Chianti(Tuscany, Italy) | Bottles of Retromarcia, or “reverse-gear”, include a cork with an imprint of a stick shift. Michigan native, Michael Schmelzer, bought Tuscan land in 2003 and makes unbelievable Sangiovese on the Monte Bernardi estate extending over 53 hectares (130 acres). The vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the Grand Cru of Chianti Classico. Retromarcia is some of the best value Chianti on the market! It is a must try! Vines are planted on shale, sandstone, and limestone, and at an expose of 350 meters above sea level, all of these factors contribute to the unique micro-climate of Monte Bernardi.

2017 Paul Barre Aux Caudelayres (Bordeaux, France) | With his son, Gabriel, winemaker Paul Barre grows wine down in Fronsac with only biodynamic principles. This blend of Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in a combination of stainless steel and used barrels. This wine is full of ripe blackberry, plum, and spice bracketed by earthiness.
