Cheers to the Mamas!

Not only has Beyoncé's killer new album Lemonade taken over the shop's opening and closing dance parties, but I'm pretty sure she has (once again) taken over the whole globe. What we love most about Queen Bey is she is a powerful woman doing what she loves and sharing her talents with the world.

Inspired by Bey and the approaching Mother’s Day, we'll be tasting wine from five gifted female winemakers: Cristiana Tiberio, Filipa Pato, Anne-Sophie Dubois, Marie-Pierre d'Ardhuy Plumet and France Crispeels. These powerhouses, i.e. these Queens, exude strength through their wines, prowess in their winemaking and are role models for everyone who experiences their wines.

This tasting is to honor these women of the vine, as well as all of the women with whom they share their wine. This is a tasting to honor the moms, the daughters, the sisters, the aunts, the grandmothers, and friends. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom! #yasssqueen

Featured Wines and Lady Winemakers:

2014 Tiberio Trebbiano d'Abruzzo - Abruzzo, Italy (grape: Trebbiano d’Abruzzo)
In 2011 Cristiana Tiberio became the lead winemaker of her family’s estate. Cristiana graduated with a chemistry degree while training in vineyards in Champagne, Australia, the Mosel and Chablis. She chooses vassal selections from their oldest vines thus giving more complexity in her signature unique Trebbiano d’Abruzzo grape.

2014 Filipa Pato Vinho Branco - Bairrada, Portugal (grapes: Bical, Arinto)
Filipa Pato is one of the bright young talents of Portuguese winemaking abiding by her philosophy: "Authentic Wines without Make-up". She places emphasis on making wine that speaks from the Bairrada region and has helped re-establish the healthy growth of the once devastated yields of the Baga grape. I once heard from a fellow Portuguese winemaker visiting our shop, "Filipa is one of the most rockstar winemakers in all of Portugal."

2014 Dubois Fleurie “L'Alchimiste” - Burgundy, France (grape: Gamay)
Anne-Sophie Dubois is part of a young generation of rising star vignerons based in Fleurie in Beaujolais. Anne-Sophie achieves elegant expressions of Gamay in her young wine, l'Alchemiste, without the addition of new oak, but instead, cement vats

2014 La Cabotte Cotes du Rhone Rouge - Rhone Valley, France (grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Carignan)
Marie-Pierre d'Ardhuy Plumet was born in Burgundy where her father Gabriel d'Ardhuy owned Domaine d'Ardhuy. Since only two of his seven daughters desired to become vintners, he bought a property in southern Rhone in 1981, which is now run by Marie-Pierre. Domaine la Cabotte covers a total of 45 hectares, 15 of which are covered by dense forests protecting the remaining 30 hectares of vineyards located on the slopes of Massif d’Uchaux. The vineyards have always been farmed organically and since 2007 they have been certified biodynamic.

2013 Domaine Reveille Cote Catalanes Rouge "Franc Tireur” - Languedoc Roussillon, France (grape: Carignan)
France Crispeels is a mother, a winemaker and a biodynamic force to be reckoned with. France started her own venture in 2006 using vine parcels of Carignan and Grenache, while being inspired by the wild and mountainous landscapes of the Réveille in the Roussillon. Vignoble Réveille encompasses 8.6 hectares of cool terrior in the upper Vallée de l'Agly. Vignoble Réveille translates to ‘wake up vineyard’ conveying the vitality of France's wines and her desire to make wines that are pure, lively and expressive of their soil.
